The shrewd Procurement Manager knows that deployed effectively, category management can get the attention of the boardroom by increasing profitability, reducing risk and optimizing the value derived from its supply chain. This process-based approach incorporates many familiar aspects of business improvement and change management. By segmenting main areas of spend into discrete groups it allows category managers to focus their time and conduct in depth market analysis to fully leverage their procurement decisions to generate significant value for their organization. The results are often significantly greater than traditional transactional-based purchasing methods.
